Insights about OpenAI's Sora AI video generator

If you're interested in insights about OpenAI's Sora AI video generator, watch this 20-min interview with film-maker and creator, Paul Trillo, who has been using it as a tester. My comms general AI application summary and thoughts below...

Creative Process Using Sora:

  • The tool's efficiency in rendering, reducing prod time from months to days

  • Sora should be seen as a supplemental tool NOT as a replacement for traditional methods.

👀 My views: A really important point, see AI as a tool to help the experienced person to improve efficiency, where you as the creator, be it in writing or any form of art, are still at the centre.

Your role is asking the right questions through prompts, and fine-tuning further questions to enable the strength of the AI tool you use to iterate useful replies.

You then review and orchestrate the outputs outside of the AI tool to shape it to your desired and final output. Your mindset should be focused on AI not replacing traditional methods as the final version. I love this point that it's supplementary.

Impact & Implications:

  • Concerns abt AI in filmmaking, Sora introduces efficiencies, BUT it does not replace the nuanced decisions made in traditional filmmaking.

  • He critiqued outrageous and exaggerated reactions from some people, and argues for a balanced view of AI's role in creative processes.

  • Potential to resurrect previous unfeasible scrapped projects due to budgets/technical constraints.

👀 My views: Another great point, that you are the editor, the decision-creator. You understand all of the outside nuances and details that you can't include in any single or multiple prompts. You're not looking for the output generated as the copy and paste as final. You take the generated output to shape further.

Like a painter, you wield the brush. You're looking to understand the tool and experiment with it to refine and fine-tune multiple times. You bring the power of curiousity and questions as well as direction in its use. It's about looking at your processes and based on informed judgement you can start to integrated it into your workflow because you better understand its strengths and yours.

Views on AI in Art:

  • Acknowledges the debate around AI in art, advocating for the inclusion of artists in the dev of visual technologies to ensure their meaningful application.

👀 My views: Debate and inclusion are vital as is education and training. The more insight we all share in our use and learnings, the better we can leverage its use as a tool for different applications.

The key is in understanding your workflows, know what tools are out there, and which ones are best for which job. I'll be sharing soon my insights on communications workflows and how i've integrated AI into them.
